The film receives not one but five separate, but identical, releases. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial comes to Blu-ray courtesy of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. And like Jaws and Indiana Jones before it, and Jurassic Park after, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial represents one of the finest genre pictures ever made, and serves as a template for dozens of sci-fi films that followed. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial comes damn close to perfect filmmaking. If that were the case, no film would ever be worthy of the “perfect” moniker. But perfection should not be gauged by whether or not a film is flawed. And sometimes these flaws can come straight to the surface in this hi-def version of the film. The somewhat low-budget shortcomings of the picture are found throughout. Of the Spielberg films made in the era, it's actually one of the grimier experiences. Rich with metaphor and raw emotion, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial certainly tugs at your heartstrings, but the film also delivers a wonderfully rich experience layered with dazzling effects, terrific action, plenty of comedy, outstanding cinematography, great performances and one of cinema's most tear-jerking finales. All the while, government agents are snooping around, seeking out the alien being. shows signs of sickness and Elliot must help him contact his people before it's too late. quickly bond, but it's not long before E.T. The film, for those who've been in a coma for the past 30 years, follows a young boy named Elliot who discovers a strange alien being in his backyard and befriends him.
